Private James Bernard Kanalley
Born May 15th, 1868 in Cobourg, Northumberland Co, Ontario, Canada, James was the 8th of 9 children to Irish immigrants, Thomas Kanalley and Rose
Flynn. His brother Michael had a son Arthur Kanalley in 1886. Arthur also
fought in WWI.
James grew up in the Roman Catholic family and became a
painter. He married Mary Ann Wallace also of Cobourg, daughter of Andrew
Wallace and Catherine Bulger. They had 5 children: Wallace James (1902),
Catherine Rose, Mary Marjory, Marlene Frances, and Ann. My great-grandfather
was Wallace Kanalley. Relatives in America spelled the name KANALEY, in
Ireland spelled the name KENNELLY, and in Australia spelled the name
KENNEALLY. My particular branch, beginning with James, preferred the
spelling KANALLEY. I have also seen various other spellings in older
records, as I have done genealogical research on this family.
James died in
1918 after returning home to Cobourg, from complications of mustard gas.
This account was submitted by Craig Kanalley, great-great-grandson of James.
